Chile takes a major step toward implementing ITMO authorizations

On July 30, the Government of Chile submitted the Draft National Regulation for Article 6 of the Paris Agreement to the Office of the Comptroller General. This represents a major milestone in the country’s journey to formalize its domestic legal framework for international carbon cooperation.

This step, known in Chile as the “toma de razón”, is part of the pre‑publication legal process. Once reviewed and acknowledged by the Comptroller, the regulation can be officially enacted, providing the basis for bilateral cooperation under Article 6.2 and access to market mechanisms under Article 6.4.

The regulation will enable Chile to formally authorize carbon credit transfers, support mitigation outcomes, and clarify the national institutional setup for participation in global carbon markets.
